The main reason behind this is that sperm cells forms as a result of an incessantly dividing spermatagonium. As a result, four sperm cells are produced from only a differentiated spermatagonium. On the other hand, the oocytes do not have such stem cells and they are capable of yielding only one ovum. Oogenesis is a more complex process than spermatogenesis and thus requires a complicated interaction of various factors and hormones within the oocytes.
