Darwin's theory of natural selection is important because it enables us to understand the forces driving evolution in living organisms. This evolutionary mechanism may also be used in different research fields ranging from molecular biology to economy.

The evolution theory states that the organisms that are better adapted to the environment have more chances to survive and to reproduce, thereby perpetuating their own genes in future generations. This idea of selection can also be applied to other disciplines. For example, in the economics field, it has been proposed that Darwin's theory may explain why those traits related to morality (such as fairness, honesty and integrity) which are beneficial for one particular group but not for the individual are not selected in real life.
