    The pituitary gland is referred to as the 'master gland' due to it's master control of the body's endocrine system. The pituitary produces hormones, upon signalling by the hypothalamus, that affect (promote or inhibit) production of local hormones in other glands such as the adrenal glands, testes, ovaries, and etcetera.
