    P. falciparum is malaria parasite that replicate itself in human body. Atovaquone is a medication used in the cure of Malaria together with proguanil. Atovaquone is a hydroxynaphthoquinone, it inhibits the mitochondrial electron transport chain at the cytochrome bc1

The action of Atovaquone and it metabolites

cycloguanil complement the action of malaria parasite. Atovaquone does not have direct effects on the parasite it only enhance its ability to collapse the membrane potential of malaria parasites by sensitizing mitochondria to atovaquon.

The function of the mitochondrial pathway is to produce a proton gradient that is required for maintaining the membrane potential processes such as protein synthesis, and citric acid cycle
