This feature is possible because of the cohesion characteristic of water.

Cohesion is the intermolecular attraction that exists between same molecules. Water is strongly cohesive due to their ability to form hydrogen bonds with one another. Molecules of water at the surface forms stronger hydrogen bonds with other water molecules around it, the same way as water molecules deeper within the liquid. The cohesion of water molecules at the surface of a body of water is responsible for surface tension.
