A law is something that has been proven and can be backed up by evidence, while a theory is somewhat like a suggestion which if true then becomes a law in the future. Example, newton's law of motion.

Theory is an in-depth explanation of an observed phenomenon. A law is a statement about an observed phenomenon or a unifying concept.
