Crossing-over of chromatid segments during meiosis division I results in the formation of genetic variation.

Crossing-over is an event during the meiosis (during prophase I) and represents the exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes. As a result of it, the creation of new combinations of genes on each chromosome occur. The exchange can happen many times within the same pair of homologous chromosomes, creating unique combinations of alleles.

Crossing over of chromatid segments during meiosis division 1 results in new gene combinations. Cross over occurs between prophase 1 and metaphase 1 and is the process where homologous chromosomes pair up with each other and exchange different segments of their genetic material to form recombinant chromosomes. Additionally, it can happen during mitotic division; which may result in loss of heterozygosity.
