A pair of kidneys is the principal excretory organ of the human excretory system. Kidneys are made of millions of its functional units called nephrons. The main function of the nephrons is to filter nitrogenous waste such as urea and various other substances such as ions, minerals, and water from the blood.

After the removal of waste products from the blood by the nephrons, the waste products mix with water to form urine. Urine is then stored in the urinary bladder. When bladder is full, the urine is eliminated from the body through urethra. The elimination of urine is called urination.
