    Ammonia is used as an additive in some meat fillers to prevent E. coli contamination. Ammonia is a colorless, pungent gas which is made up of nitrogen and hydrogen. Ammonium hydroxide (ammonia mixed with water) is used as an antimicrobial to control food pathogens, such as E. coli and salmonella which may be present in beef. Ammonium hydroxide damages these organisms and lowers the acidity of meats, making it difficult for these pathogens to survive.

    To prevent E. coli contamination, ammonia is being used in some meat fillers. Although ammonia is not regarded as a disinfectant, it is an eco-friendly cleaning solution than other chemical-based products
