    Option C

    Explanation:

There are number of ways in which a fossil is formed but the most common method involves burial of dead remains of plants, animals and all other living beings deep below the earth surface. The skin of these decaying organism are preserved, however the bones and shell fossilizes with time through the process of petrification in which minerals seeps into the bone and replace its organic material. As this organic material compresses by the application of temperature and pressure, its volume and mass reduces to 1/10th of their original volume and mass, thereby forming fossils.

    Hence, option C is correct
