Homeostasis refers to balance or stability in a system. It is the mechanism shown by the body to sustain a similar internal environment. The homeostatic system comprises three parts or mechanisms. These are the receptor, the control center, and the effector.

The information regarding that something is changing in the environment is received by the receptor. The integration center or the control center receives and processes the information from the receptor. And eventually, the effector reacts towards the commands of the control center by either enhancing or opposing the stimulus. This is a continuing phenomenon, which functions spontaneously to maintain and restore homeostasis.
