Both the original DNA strands act as templates during replication.

DNA is a heteroduplex macromolecule which contains two strands of DNA coiled around each other in a helical manner. Both strands are complementary to each other in terms of base sequence of DNA. However, each strand contains useful information and therefore both strands act as templates for DNA replication. A replicated DNA molecule also contains two strands of DNA.
