The Founder Effect is a type of Genetic Drift (change in genetic variation of a population. In the Founder Effect, a group of organisms from a population is somehow separated - by a earthquake, or floor, or some natural or other type of event. In most cases, the new population (the one that was separated from the original population) is not representative of the original generation. For instance, maybe the original generation had 10% yellow feathers and 25% green feathers and 65% blue feathers. In this case, the new population might have a 15%-20%-65% split, or even a 0%-5%-95% split. This means that the original population is NOT representative of the original population. This is just one example of the Founder Effect, but for the most part, the genetic variation of a population decreases.
