I believe that math is important in genetic engineering. In the early courses, I have been told, require optimization, encoding, etc. There are a lot of questions regarding multiobjective optimization.

you need to be good with calculation as a genetic engineer you need to be good in your projections and estimate, so in terms of numerical ability yes, mathematical skills will give you edge over others.
