How is a gram-positive cell envelope (cell wall) different than a gram-negative cell envelope

    Gram Positive Gram Negative

    Retain the crystal violet stain

    (primary stain) and appear in purple

    under microscope. Does not retain the crystal violet

    stain, appear as pink with safranin

    (counter stain)

    2. The cell wall primarily composed

    of peptidoglycan Cell wall contain three main

    components - (1) Lipopolysaccharides,

    (2) Lipoproteins and (3) Peptidoglycan

    3. Thick and

    homogenous cell wall. Thin and heterogeneous cell wall.

    4. Less lipid content Comparatively more lipid content

    5. Teichoic acid present Teichoic acid absent

    6. LPS absent LPS present
