A clinical thermometer has a constriction whereas a laboratory thermometer does not. This is because a clinical thermometer needs to hold the temperature of the patient it was recently removed from long enough for the medical provider to read and record it. A laboratory thermometer however needs to change immediately with the temperature around it so that clinical tests can be recorded more accurately.
