    Elements like carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are present in great quantities in the biosphere. They are critical for the existence of life. A gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, e. g., carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons by absorbing infrared radiation causes an increase in global atmospheric temperature
