A double helix looks like a twisted ladder. Which parts of a twisted ladder are analogous to the hydrogen bonds and sugar-phosphate backbones of a double helix of DNA?

    The hydrogen bonds could be seen as the horizontal bars across the ladder, as in DNA they are found between the backbones.

    The sugar-phosphate backbones could be seen as the 2 vertical, long parts either side or the ladder. This is because in DNA the backbones run along either side of the hydrogen bonds and bases.
