You can get mercury poisoning if you eat daily meals of tuna, a top predator. however, you can safely eat sardines, which are primary consumers, every day. what biological process explains this? see section 53.1 (page 1118).

    The answer would be: Biomagnification

    In the food chain, the higher level will get less energy because they have less prey. But, the toxin level will be higher because it will be accumulated from the lower level. The accumulation of toxin is called biomagnification.

    The shark that eats the tuna will have the highest level of the toxin in this case.
