What would happen if a plant's xylem was completely blocked?

In transpiration pull, the evaporation of water from leaves (mesomorph cells) creates negative pressure or tension in the xylem that pulls the water from the roots and soil. But if we block the xylem at root, transpiration pull also get affected resulting in wilting of plants.
