    Glaciers are formed when the snow remains in the same area throughout the year and it gets transformed into ice.

    Every year more snow accumulates on the older snow to form ice, this compresses the older snow.

    This compression forces the snow to recrystallize forming the grain size of sugar. Gradually the size of the grains increases. The air pockets between the particles decreases and increases in density.

    It takes thousands of years for this process to occur.
