The crab is a natural predator to the snail. Overtime, the shell of the snail has become thicker and spinous to deter the crab's predation. The evolutionary response to this would most likely be that

the crab species will become extinct because they have no food source.

the snails will thrive and the predator/prey relationship will swing back.

the crab will find a new organism to prey upon.

the crab will evolve to have more powerful claws.
