What is the functional contractile unit of the myofibril?

These are the sarcomeres. These are the long, fibrous proteins that allow muscles to contract as they do work. These proteins also give striated muscle their striped appearance. They are composed of two proteins: myosin and actin. Sarcomeres slide past each other as they are engaged or disengaged.
