Restriction enzymes may also known as the molecular scissors as they have the ability to cut the DNA molecule. Two main types of restriction enzymes are exonuclease and endonuclease.

The restriction enzymes plays an important role in biotechnology and molecular biology. The restriction enzymes apart from mapping can perform the other functions as well. The restriction enzymes plays an important role in providing immunity to the bacterias. They also protects the host DNA. They also plays an important in the restriction modification system of prokaryotes.
