Describe how the lac operon functions, and explain how it permits E. coli to produce the enzymes needed to break down lactose when it is present in the bacterium.

    The lac operation operates under two different types of mechanisms. Lac operon functions when there is a shortage of glucose but lactose is present. It codes for lactase to break down lactose into glucose and galactose. More cAMP is produced as a result.
