Because the oxygen produced in photosynthesis is used in respiration, and the carbon dioxide produced in respiration is used in photosynthesis.

The reactants involved in the process of photosynthesis are carbon dioxide and water, which are also the products of respiration. Moreover, the products of photosynthesis are oxygen and energy, and this oxygen is used as a reactant in respiration.
