Why are we protecting endangered species?

So they don't become extinct forever.

Other than the fact that they are endangered and it seems morally wrong to let a species die out if we have the ability to keep that from happening. Also if we keep them around then you never know maybe as our scientist studies them they might find something that can greatly benefit us as a whole.
