    Carbohydrate is the most efficient source of energy for athletes as it provide the energy that fuels muscle contractions. One gram of carbohydrate provides four calories of energy. When carbohydrates are consumed, they break down into smaller sugars such as glucose, fructose, and galactose. They get absorbed and are later used as energy. Glucose that are not utilized immediately are stored in the form of glycogen in the muscles and the liver. Glycogen is the source of energy frequently used for exercise because it is easily accessible as it make energy available during the first few minutes of any sport.
