When the cells are placed in a hypotonic solution (a low salt concentration) water will move into the cell and the cell will expand. When the cells are placed in a hypertonic solution (a high salt concentration) water will moved out of the cell and the cell will shrink. When a cell is put into water with the same salt concentration as there is within the cell, there will be no movement of water and the cell will remain the same size.
