In this way, the character presence is not unique to the ancestor, but also in all heirs, however with a possible variation. This new variation or new character state is recognized as a derived condition, arose from the change in the state of the ancestral character. A derived condition has the potential to serve as a determinant for defining a new group is called apomorphy. An apomorphy can be unique to a group and is called a case of autapomorphy, or when it is shared by two or more groups it is called synapomorphy.
