    Explanation:

    In humans only about 1% of DNA is coding, that is, only 1% of our genome is composed of exonic regions capable of synthesizing proteins. Teherefore, the other 99 percent is noncoding. When this was discovered the scientists thought that 99% of non-coding DNA was "junk", however, now we know that some of the non-coding DNA is important to regualte gene expression.
