Ice is less dense than water, which allows it to float on liquid water. Why does this happen?

    Ice floats because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water. A substance floats if it is less dense, or has less mass per unit volume, than other components in a mixture.

    Ice is less dense then water because the orientation of hydrogen bonds causes molecules to push farther apart which lowers density.
