Due to their like - dissolve - like forms steroid hormone are transported free across the phophoslipid membranes. These hormones on reaching the cytoplasm may undergo enzyme mediated alteration, and later binded with specific steroid hormone receptors.

In order to enter the cell nucleus, some of these receptors joined together as a sub unit, called a a dimer.

It is this Dimer which exist as one functional DNA binding unit that enters the cell nucleus. In the latter the steroid-receptor ligand complex binds with a specific DNA sequence to bring about transcription of the targeted gene; to complete genomic pathways.
