Most nutrients absorbed by the small intestine pass to the portal venous system which drains to the liver, where they are processed. Fats (lipids) are passed to the lymphatic system through lymph vessels called lacteals. They are passed from the lymphatic system to the blood circulation via the thoracic duct.
