    Self-incompatibility

It is one of the widespread mechanism in the flowering plants which avoids the inbreeding and promotes the outcrossing.

The SI response is controlled genetically by one or more multi - alleic loci, and relies on the series of the complex cellular interactions between the pistil and the slef - incompatible pollen.

The function of SI is to prevent the process of self - fertilization.

Mechanism of Self - incompatibility -

The mechanism of SI is based on, protein - protein interactions.

    For example,

For single locus termed as S, which has many different allens in the species population.

Due to similar genetic and morphological manifestation, the mechanism have involved independently, and are based on different cellular components, Hence, each mechanism has its own unique S - genes.
