Explanation: Mitochondria are membrane bound organelles found in every living cell both plant and animal cells. Mitochondria are the power house of the cell. The mitochondria are responsible for the storage and release of energy in cells during respiration. Each mitochondrion has two membranes: the outer and the inner membrane. The outer membrane is wrinkled and surrounds the organelle while the inner membrane is folded and encloses the matrix. The matrix is a very concentrated aqueous solution of enzymes and chemical intermediates involved in energy-yielding metabolism. The mitochondrial enzymes catalyze the oxidation of organic nutrients by molecular oxygen to generate ATP.
