    The function and importance of vacuoles vary according to the type of cell in which they are present. In general, these functions are related to defense mechanisms (detoxification, protection) which include:

    * The isolation of potentially harmful component for the cell

    * Waste management using digestion enzyme or endocytosis of aged organelles

    * Maintaining the water balance

    * The storage of water and molecules such as certain pigments, defense molecules, transient storage of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

    * Role in pressure and cell turgor allowing the rigidity of certain structures such as flowers, stems or leaves.

    In the absence of vacuoles, the cell will not benefit from its functions.

    * She will not be able to detoxify herself.

    * It will not be able to maintain the water balance and the turgor of the cell.

    * She will not be able to store her nutrients.
