A wide number of antibiotics have been created today to treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics have been greatly effective in treating many diseases. An unintended negative side effect of the development of antibiotics is that A) people recover faster from infections. B) antibiotics cannot treat viral infections. C) overuse has contributed to the rise of new resistant bacteria. D) there are a large number of different antibiotics available today.

    I believe the answer is C) overuse has contributed to the rise of new resistant bacteria.

    Every time you use antibiotics, you will kill the sensitive bacteria while leaving the resistant unharmed. This will reduce sensitive bacteria colony, which makes the resistant bacteria be able to live without competition. This is the unwanted negative side effect of antibiotic usage. Faster recovery and a higher number of antibiotics are beneficial, thus intentional.
