During what phase of the moon does a lunar eclipse occur?

    A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes into the Earth's shadow. Therefore this happens during a full moon, when the illuminated side of the moon is facing the Earth. The sun, Earth and moon have to lie along a straight line.
