The vestibular system has three parts in each ear, the utricle, the saccule, and three semi-circular canals. The utricle and saccule detect linear movement and vertical movement using gravity. The semicircular canals detect rotational movement using a fluid called called endolymph. All of these parts would be activated by the movement of a ship at sea.
