Transcription and translation are part of the gene expression process (information from DNA is used for protein synthesis).

Transcription is the first step in gene expression which involves copying a DNA sequence to make an RNA molecule-messenger RNA (mRNA). The main enzyme for transcription is RNA polymerases, which binds nucleotides to form an RNA strand, using a DNA strand as a template.

Translation is a process of "decoding" the mRNA in order to synthesize a protein (polypeptide). In a mRNA, the instructions for building a polypeptide are RNA nucleotides read in groups of three-codons. Codons are specified for different amino-acids (but it is possible that one amino-acid corresponds to two or three codons). Amino-acids are structural units for synthesis of the polypeptide chain.
