A gene map refers to a chromosomal map that describes the spatial arrangement of genes on a chromosome. Genes that are located on different chromosomes or that are located far apart on the same chromosome are described as unlinked genes, while those that are close together on the same chromosomes are said to be linked. Linkage maps are made by finding recombination frequency for several gene pairs. Linkage maps show the order and relative distance of the genes on a chromosome. To make a linkage map for a group of organisms, scientists have to find out the number of linked genes that are common to the group.
