What is the primary function of the carbon cycle?

The carbon cycle is how carbon is distributed throughout the earth. From the atmosphere to the lithosphere everything is made of carbon in some way or another. If the carbon cycle fails then life will essentially cease to exist. So basically the primary function of the carbon cycle is to keep everything alive.
