One of the biggest threats to global health, development, and food security at present time is antibiotic resistance. The process can take place naturally, however, the misuse of antibiotics is enhancing the procedure.

The development of antibiotic resistance has enhanced due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, as well as poor infection control and prevention.

Some of the steps can be taken in order to control and prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance, that is, only use prescribed antibiotics by a certified health professional. Never use leftover antibiotics, and prevent infections by using proper hygiene techniques.

There is a need to do something in order to restrict the further development of resistant bacteria. For this, WHO has implemented a global action plan on antimicrobial resistance, with the following objectives:

    1. To reduce the occurrence of infection.

    2. To improve understanding and awareness of antimicrobial resistance.

    3. To optimize the application of antimicrobial medicines.

    4. To strengthen research and surveillance.
