Nitrogen is very important for life on Earth. It is an essential nutrient for plants and animals, it is a major component of protein. Protein is neccessary for animals to grow, reproduce, and survive. Through the nitrogen cycle, it's atoms move between living things, dead things, the air, the soil, and water. Plants incorporate nitrogen from soil, and when they are eaten by animals, animals incorporate it too. Carnivores get it from their preys.
