The change that occurs in deciduous forests in the winter is b. Trees block the flow of water and nutrients to their leaves. During the growth of the leaf, an abscission layer forms between the petiole and the stem. The cells in the abscission layer are connected but can easily be separated from each other. In the autumn, these cells elongate. Their elongation breaks the connection between the cells and the flow of water and nutrients to the leaves is blocked. Soon, the leaves will get dry and they will break away from the tree.
