A solar eclipse is when the moon enters the suns pathway and this causes earth to be blocked so very little light is reaching earth's surface.
A lunar eclipse is when the moon enters the earth's umbra and this causes the moon to appear red. This only occurs when the sun, earth, and moon are very closely together.
