Oogenesis occurs in the peripheral (outermost) layers of the ovaries present in the female reproductive system.

    Explanation:

Oogenesis is the process of female gamete or ovum/egg formation from the primordial germ cells called oogonium originating from the embryo's yolk sac. This process leads to various differentiation and maturation processes to produce a mature ovum.

Oogenesis occurs in three stages - multiplication, growth and maturation stages.

The initial cells undergoing meiotic division are called the primary oocytes which later develop follicular layers and vitellogenesis to form the secondary oocytes before maturing into a fully potential mature ovum. Oogenesis results in haploid number of gametes.
