    23 chromosomes

    Explanation:

Most of the animals have diploid cells and mode of reproduction is sexual. Eggs cells have half of the number of chromosomes called haploid cell in animals cell which are diploid cells. These egg cells than contribute for sexual reproduction to result in a diploid offspring.

So, an animal having 48 chromosomes will have 23 chromosomes in the egg cell. The process of meiosis reduces chromosome number that makes egg cells to have half set of chromosomes.

Hence, the correct answer is 23 chromosomes.
