Why is it so important that the dna molecule be able to make copies of itself?

    Because you wouldn't be able to pass on genetic information to daughter cells if you couldn't replicate DNA. Every time you'd create a daughter cell, you'd have half as many chromosomes as the parent cell, until you have to split a single chromosome.

    DNA has to replicate in order for cells to reproduce via both mitosis and meiosis
